A Simple Video Explanation of Quantum Computers

January 6, 2020

I confess it. I have never understood (even remotely) the concepts behind quantum computers. I know John does (but then he's a gifted engineer) and so does my friend Dave Ries (HT for sending the video Dave).

I also know I'm not alone because every time I mention quantum computing (except to John and Dave), I get a deer-in-the-headlights look. So I thought I might begin this blogging year by sharing a video giving a very simple look at what makes a quantum computers different from the computers we use today.

I got a glimmering of what quantum computing is all about from the video, as well as some of its implications for our future. In just over four minutes, if you are as clueless as I was, you can perhaps understand in an elemental way what makes quantum computing different.

One thing I never understood is how cold these computers need to be kept. Would you believe -486 degrees Fahrenheit? That blew my mind.

Happy 2020 all!
