Has Home Depot Suffered a Data Breach?

September 4, 2014

It's beginning to look that way according to an SC Magazine story. Brian Krebs broke the news on Tuesday that a large number of payment cards available to purchase on an underground marketplace may be tied to Home Depot stores. The initial analysis indicates that all 2,200 Home Depot stores in the U.S. may have been impacted – and the breach may have dated back to late April or early May.

A Home Depot representative gave this statement to SC Magazine: “At this point, I can confirm that we're looking into some unusual activity and we are working with our banking partners and law enforcement to investigate.”

The initial thought of many experts is that Home Depot may have been targeted by the same hackers who planted malware on so many other businesses, including Target, to siphon off customer data.

And Home Depot is my husband's favorite store. Sigh.
