How to Successfully Siphon Business From Law Firms

November 18, 2013

Be more efficient.

Lower overhead.

Charge less.

Track and demonstrate savings.

Create a pricing model that gives you a portion of the money you save clients.

A legal services company called Novus Law has done just that. The ABA Journal had a great feature article on this subject. It is impressive when an attorney says, as one happy client of Novus did, that the company saved her 15-30% in fees she would normally pay to outside counsel.

The founders of Novus say that 80% of their work would normally be done by large firms. Currently, Novus is known for reviewing, managing and analyzing documents for large-scale litigation, but is poised to begin drafting briefs and motions as well.

Novus has tripled its revenues year after year – hard to argue with that kind of success. I often tell audiences when I teach "The Future of Law" about the importance of "seeking open space" – much in the same way the best jockeys do in horse races. Novus Law has done exactly that.
