Podcast: Automating Legal Technology Audits of Law Firms

October 21, 2013

Casey Flaherty gained a lot of notoriety when he began doing legal tech audits of law firms that Kia Motors was using or considering using. The law firms did not fare well.

Jim Calloway and I were very interested in the idea that corporate clients might begin, en masse, performing such legal technology audits. So we invited our friend, Professor Andy Perlman, of Suffolk University Law School, to take a guest turn on our Legal Talk Network Digital Edge podcast.

Suffolk University has partnered with Casey to automate his audit, which rather decisively proved that clients are spending a lot of unnecessary monies on lawyers who are so unfamiliar with basic technology skills that they take more than five hours to complete what should be a 20-minute task. Given the hourly rates at large law firms, this kind of inefficiency really amounts to picking the pockets of clients – and law firms have had little incentive to become more efficient. This audit may change the landscape.

Andy talks about the need for the audit, when it will be available and what he thinks about the possibility of "cheating" on the audit. Andy is a great guest – full of humor and insights – and Jim and I think he's really on to something with this audit. Enjoy.
