FTC SAYS BLOGGERS MUST DISCLOSE PAID REVIEWS

October 6, 2009

We've all heard reports about bloggers shilling for companies for money, products or services. After a while, one learns to separate the wheat from the chaff, but the Federal Trade Commission has decreed that enough is enough.

The FTC hadn't touched its rules regarding endorsements and testimonials since 1980. But beginning on December 1, 2009, bloggers must disclose any conflict of interest – including money or freebies. The new rules also affect testimonials by consumers, organizations, experts and celebrities. They carry penalties up to $11,000 per violation. Not chump change, to be sure.
