UK PERMITS SERVICE VIA TWITTER FOR ANONYMOUS POSTER

October 5, 2009

BBC News reported on October 1, 2009, that the British High Court ruled that an injunction might be served on an individual who made anonymous posts on Twitter. The user was posing as Donal Blaney, a right wing blogger.

U.K. law allows injunctions to be served via fax and e-mail, not just in person. This is the first known instance of a British Court permitting an injunction to be served via Twitter. Understandably, Mr. Blaney did not want to go through the tedious and expensive process of determining the imposter's identity by dealing with Twitter headquarters in California.

I love the name given to the injunction: "Blaney's Blarney Order." Spot on mates.

Hat tip to friend/colleague Lincoln Mead for pointing this story out.
