77% of Workers Use Social Media Regardless of Employer Policies

Employees are anarchists. You put policies in place – even have employees sign off on them in an employee handbook – and they ignore what they have signed. A new PewResearchCenter report says that fully 77% of workers say they use social media regardless of whether you have a policy prohibiting their use.

The most common reasons for using social media are taking a break from work, connecting with friends and family and making or supporting professional connections. About half of employers are reported to have social media policies, but as noted above, employees often don't care.

Relatively few employees use social media for work-related purposes (no surprise there). A majority of respondents agreed that social media distracts them from the work they need to so. No surprise there either.

As we all know, using technology to ban social media use isn't popular with employees – and of course, employees can always use their personal phones to evade the technology.

What's an employer to do? Good question.
