China Plans to Embed Police Units at Internet Companies

August 19, 2015

SC Magazine reported (based on a Wall Street Journal article – sub.req.) that China's government plans to embed cybersecurity police units into major Chinese Internet companies.

The move will allow the government to further control the country's online forums and websites, although China's official news service bills it as helping the companies prevent crimes, such as fraud, and also the “spreading of rumors.” Excuse me while I clear my throat.

The government didn't clarify whether it would also put these units in international tech companies operating in China. A poorly received cybersecurity law was presented earlier this year and called for tighter controls over Internet companies that would require them to store user data and share it with the government. The current plan to embed cybersecurity police units is thought to be another way to exert control after the earlier law received pushback.

China has mastered the art of Doublespeak in the post-Orwellian era. Then again, we're getting pretty good at it ourselves – more's the pity . . .
