COME FLY WITH ME. YIKES, WHERE’S MY LAPTOP?

September 5, 2008

Lawyers routinely fly with their laptops, replete with electronic evidence and confidential client data. A new study from the venerable Ponemon Institutes reports that business travelers are now losing about 12,000 laptops a year at U.S. airports, some of them truly lost but most actually stolen. Sixty-five percent of them are unencrypted (surely you’ve heard about encryption by now?). Roughly one third of the laptops eventually find their way home, with or without having divulged their secrets.

If you would like to have a REALLY good chance of having your laptop stolen, your best bets are Los Angeles International, Miami International, Kennedy International and Chicago O’Hare.

Sigh – and I’ll be at O’Hare when you read this. Good thing I like living dangerously.

Hat tip to Mike McLaurin for passing this report along.
