Edward Snowden Schools Donald Trump in E-Discovery

November 8, 2016

Fortune reported on a statement made by Donald Trump on Sunday. He said of Hillary Clinton's FBI review of e-mails on Anthony Weiner's laptop, "Right now she's being protected by a rigged system. It's a totally rigged system . . . You can't review 650,000 new emails in eight days. You can't do it, folks."

Jeff Jarvis, a journalism professor, tweeted at NSA whistleblower and former CIA agent Edward Snowden to ask how long it would take to go through all those emails. Snowden quickly explained in a single tweet that eight days is more than plausible. The exchange went like this:

"Jeff Jarvis @jeffjarvis

Hey @Snowden, for context, how long would it take the NSA to dedupe 650k emails?

Edward Snowden @Snowden

@jeffjarvis Drop non-responsive To:/CC:/BCC:, hash both sets, then subtract those that match. Old laptops could do it in minutes-to-hours."

Here endeth the lesson.
