EXPECT ZERO PRIVACY AT WORK

June 18, 2008

Heidi Glynn, from NPR, recently interviewed me and wrote a very nice piece which can be found at http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=91604666.

Note how the percentage of employers monitoring employees has continued to rise: “According to a 2007 American Management Association survey of 304 U.S. companies, 43 percent of employers store and review employees’ e-mail messages. Nearly 30 percent of them have fired workers for e-mail misuse — for violating company policy, for using inappropriate or offensive language, for excessive personal use, and for breach of confidentiality.”

And yes, I suppose my Vice President (and husband) might be monitoring me. As I’ve cheerfully admonished him, if he chooses to do that, he’s going to spoil all his Christmas surprises. But for the rest of you, en garde. The boss is very likely watching.
