FBI Warns Healthcare Industry About its Poor Information Security

April 30, 2014

Information Week's Dark Reading posted an article about the FBI's warning this month to heathcare providers that they are not prepared to deal with a likely increase in cyberattacks. The financial sector is thought by experts to be as much as a decade ahead of healthcare providers in information security.

A remarkable number of healthcare organizations are only now digitizing their records – lack of experience in the digital world plays a large part in the lack of sound security practices.

Verizon's latest data breach report analyzed 25 healthcare breaches. The two main causes of the breaches involved loss or theft of devices and errors where unintentional actions compromised security.

Another survey indicated security incidents with former or current employees, and issues with access management, bring your own device policies and slow patching cycles.

Time for the industry to step up its game!
