Former Citibank Employee Sentenced After Shutting Down 90% of Firm’s Network

August 1, 2016

SD Magazine reported last Friday that a former Citibank employee was sentenced to 21 months in prison after wiping routers and shutting down a whopping 90 percent of the firm's network access across North America.

In February 2016, Lennon Ray Brown admitted to damaging a protected Citibank computer in 2013 by transmitting a code and command that erased the running configurations of 10 core Citibank Global Control Center routers.

This resulted in the loss of connectivity to 90 percent of all Citibank networks across North America. At the sentencing, the government read a text Brown sent shortly after the attack explaining his motive.

"They was firing me. I just beat them to it," the text read. "Nothing personal, the upper management need to see what they guys on the floor is capable of doing when they keep getting mistreated."

Aside from the fact that Mr. Brown has a tenuous grip on the English language, his actions drive home an oft-repeated point – yes, the majority of your threats are external – but ignore the internal threats at your own peril!
