Former Prosecutor Charged After Allegedly Filming Woman in Tanning Salon

February 3, 2015

These are the kinds of stories you get when I am tasked to do an updated version of "The Ethical Misadventures of Lawyers in the Digital World," certainly one of our most requested CLEs.

So it is always helpful when the ABA Journal has a new "misadventure" story.

Former 8th Circuit Assistant State Attorney William Ezzell, 37, was charged on January 23rd with video voyeurism for allegedly using a cellphone to record a woman in her underwear at a Gainesville, Florida tanning salon. The Gainesville Sun reported that the incident took place on September 4, 2014.

Ezzell resigned as a prosecutor after news coverage of the allegations. According to prior reports, a screaming woman at the tanning salon claimed a man had used his cellphone to record her in her underwear from above the tanning room wall. The man left the salon after he was accused.

Ezzell was identified as the alleged suspect by his registration at the salon and surveillance video.

Should the allegation be proven, this goes in my "What was he thinking?" file. It's a very large file.
