Mandiant Bought By FireEye for More Than $1 Billion

January 8, 2014

I had to look at the story twice to believe the figure. Thanks to Sean Harrington for forwarding this story detailing the purchase of Mandiant by FireEye for more than $1 billion.

To anyone who watches information security, Mandiant has become a household name, constantly in the news for its investigation of data breaches and its reports on the state of data security (or insecurity).

This really is quite a collaboration. To quote from the January 2nd press release issued by FireEye, "The leader in stopping today’s advanced cyber attacks, announced today that it has acquired privately held Mandiant, the leading provider of advanced endpoint security products and security incident response management solutions. The acquisition, which recognizes the ever-increasing intensity of cyber attacks and follows nearly two years of collaboration, creates the industry’s leading advanced threat protection vendor with the ability to find and stop attacks at every stage of the attack life cycle. The transaction closed on December 30, 2013."

And, as I type, the FireEye home page says in one of its rotating headlines "Two industry leaders create one united front against cybercriminals."

It will be interesting to see what the merger of these two firms portends. There sure is a lot of cerebral horsepower now collaborating.
