New Law Firm Phishing E-mail Cites Referral from an ABA Law Firm

May 16, 2016

Thanks to Claudia Rast for sending along a phishing e-mail received by her firm purportedly from a company seeking help in collecting funds from another company. The author of the e-mail claims to have been referred by another law firm belonging to the ABA. There is a link to a website – very likely a malware-infected website.

I sent that e-mail along to the ABA and it is my understanding that the ABA intends to send out an alert about these phishing e-mails – apparently, other folks had contacted the ABA about receiving similar e-mails.

Be on high alert – if the authors of these e-mails amp up their efforts, they may well name a specific ABA member law firm – if recipients have relationships with that firm, the e-mail may seem more credible. This is another educational opportunity to spread the word because your lawyers and employees can never receive enough training about attempts to breach your firm.

Also, kudos to the ABA for reacting so promptly after being tipped off that these e-mails were circulating last week.
