Protecting Personal Information: Updated FTC Guide for Business

January 10, 2017

The Federal Trade Commission has published an updated version of its Protecting Personal Information: A Guide for Business.

There are, as the guide points out, five fundamental principles which will help keep your data safe

  1. Know what personal information you have
  2. Don't collect personal information you don't need
  3. Protect the information that you keep
  4. Securely dispose of information you no longer need
  5. Have a plan to respond to a security incident

Sounds simple, but it is amazing how few businesses seem to do these things. The guide contains a number of helpful checklists.
