Security Resolutions for 2016

January 4, 2016

On the first Monday of the New Year, no one is ready for anything too serious. So I was delighted to find a story from Naked Security in which various staffers were asked about their security resolutions for 2016. My favorite was this one:

Mark Stockley

In 2016 I will stop treating my Mac's offer to postpone software updates like the snooze button on my alarm clock.

If my laptop is open then it means I'm working and I don't want to down tools for a software update. When I'm asked if I want to install software updates now or in one hour I choose one hour.

I tell myself that one more hour won't hurt. I tell myself that what I'm doing is terribly important, that I'll have finished in an hour, and I'll do the update then.

I tell myself this every hour, over and over for days weeks.

In fact I have an update pending now…

I can emphasize.

As a bonus, there is a great video ad from Sophos at the end of the story about resolutions from your end users. As we do IT support in addition to digital forensics and information security, this hilarious video (you can afford two minutes to smile, right?) really struck home. I don't think there was a story in the video we haven't lived through. Enjoy.
