The 2015 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report is Out!

April 15, 2015

Thanks to Dave Ries for alerting me to the publication of The 2015 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report.

I am scrambling to get to ABA TECHSHOW and polish my presentations so let me just recite a few of the highlights from the report:

  • 2014 had 2,122 confirmed data breaches and 79,790 security incidents in which data was compromised
  • RAM scraping has become major – this kind of malware was present in many high-profile retail breaches
  • In 60% of the cases, attackers were able to compromise an organization within minutes
  • 23% of recipients open phishing messages and 11% click on attachments
  • 50% open e-mails and click on phishing links within the first hour after transmission
  • Out of tens of millions of mobile devices, the ones infected with truly malicious exploits was negligible, only 0.03% (that surprised me)

There is much, much more – as always, this is a report well worth reading. One lesson from the report was crystal clear: Humans need to be trained -and trained again – in safe computing and social engineering!
