The Emergence of Cybersecurity Law

Thanks to my friend and colleague Mike Goler for passing along a February report on "The Emergence of Cybersecurity Law" prepared for the Indiana University Maurer School of Law by Hanover Research. It is only 30 pages long and full of information on cybersecurity law. Many of the legal cybersecurity experts interviewed for the report are well known names and offer some perceptive thoughts.

While we all know that cybersecurity is an ever-growing concern for companies, only 23.5% have someone who works full time on cybersecurity. That will probably change over the next several years.

The answers were split pretty evenly when asked how familiar corporate counsel were with cybersecurity issues. The three-way split was between "slightly familiar," "moderately familiar" and "very familiar."

When asked the level of involvement with cybersecurity by corporate counsel, only 13% said they were very involved. That too will probably change dramatically over time. As we have all borne witness, you can't just "leave it to the IT (or IS) guys." Corporate counsel will increasingly be held accountable for the level of information security.

Anyway, a good read which might help you get some buy-in from the C-Suite . .  .
