White House Computers Hacked – Was It the Russians?

November 12, 2014

The recent breach of the White House's unclassified computer network was the subject of many press reports including one from The Guardian.

The White House says it has taken steps to address suspicious activity detected on its network. No details were released on who may have been responsible or when the activity occurred, though an unnamed White House official said that Russian hackers were suspected. As you may recall, the Russian intelligence service was accused of one breach, of the U.S. military's classified networks, in 2008.

An official said “activity of concern” was detected while assessing numerous possible cyberthreats that the Executive Office of the President is advised of each day.

The impact on normal White House activities was minor.

It struck me as a sign of the times that there are now cybersecurity threats reported to the Executive Office of the President every day. And these reports are no doubt replicated globally with respect to all world leaders.
