Would You Give Up Your Private Information for a Cookie?

October 6, 2014

For many, the answer appears to be yes. Law Technology News (sub. req.) recently reported on a collaborative project between Mashable and ProPublica in which 380 New Yorkers gave up sensitive personal information for a cookie. Now they were very nice cookies, beautifully decorated by hand. But still . . .

The foodies of New York looked at these gorgeous cookies and cheerfully gave up their addresses, driver license numbers, phone numbers, maiden names, etc. Artist Riso Puno, the cookie maven, refused to tell these folks what she intended to do with the information, referring them to a boilerplate contract.

117 people actually allowed her to take their fingerprints.

As Forrest Gump would say, "Stupid is as stupid does."

And that's all I have to say about that.
