Key Text Messages Determine Information in Fatal Crash

December 17, 2019

Text messages presented in a Calgary court case may result in a guilty verdict for a father accused of killing his daughter due to an impaired driving accident, Calgary Herald reports.

Meghan Bomford sent text messages to her mother before she was killed in a 2016 car accident. The nature of the text messages point to her father driving erratically, and ultimately causing a Jeep Liberty SUV to lose control, crash into the median, and eject all three passengers. A blood test performed at the hospital determined Mr. Bomford had alcohol in his system when the collection occurred.

The judge has stated “proof of the identity of the driver rests with the admissions (Mr. Bomford was the registered owner of the vehicle) and text messages.”

Digital forensics often plays a crucial role in determining additional information from the scene of an accident. Artifacts such as text messages, web browser history, and location services can hold a wealth of information regarding the specifics of the incident.
