Twitch Data Breach
October 21, 2021
Phil Muncaster of the Infosecurity Magazine recently published an article about the streaming platform Twitch and the data breach that the company suffered in early October. Twitch is an Amazon-owned media platform that allows for streaming content. Muncaster writes “[security] experts roundly criticized Amazon-owned Twitch after an anonymous user posted a 125 GB torrent link to 4Chan and claimed to have leaked every digital property owned by the firm.”
Twitch has responded to the incident finding that users’ login credentials were not accessed nor were full credit card numbers or banking information. The unknown attacker did gain access to the service’s source code and had access to a set of creator pay-out data. Twitch is quoted stating “We’ve undergone a thorough review of the information included in the files exposed and are confident that it only affected a small fraction of users, and the customer impact is minimal.” Muncaster writes that the attacker gained access to the Twitch data by exploiting a misconfiguration in a Twitch server.
