Classes Canceled: Cyber Attack Cripples Michigan School District

October 4, 2022

According to an article on Govtech.com, the South Redford School District, in the Detroit suburb of Redford Michigan, recently experienced a severe breach of its systems.

The district was forced to cancel classes for at least two days in a row during its attempt to remediate problems caused by the breach. School employees were also advised not to use computers, tablets, or phones issued by the district. According to a bulletin issued by South Redford School District, they are working with “Cyber Forensic Teams” to remediate the breach. The bulletin continued, “Student and staff data security continues to be a top priority for the South Redford School District. Cyber Forensics teams are diligently working to (restore) our systems to normal operations.”

This attack comes shortly after the FBI and other federal agencies have issued a Cybersecurity Advisory warning for what they believe to be a greatly heightened risk of cyber-attacks against schools. The advisory seems to have been issued because of the Vice Society cyber gang’s apparent new focus on schools and other education related entities. Vice Society is believed to be a Russian based group thought to be behind a number of intrusions and ransomware attacks starting in 2021.
