NIST Releases New AI Risk Management Framework

February 2, 2023

On January 26, NIST (the National Institute of Standards and Technology) released its new Artificial Intelligence Risk Management Framework. I have never found NIST publications easy reading – and at 48 pages, this one is no exception.

But as ChatGPT and other AI take the world by storm, it is important to understand how to manage and govern AI. As NIST itself says, “in collaboration with the private and public sectors, NIST has developed a framework to better manage risks to individuals, organizations, and society associated with artificial intelligence (AI).”

NIST went on to say that it “is intended for voluntary use and to improve the ability to incorporate trustworthiness considerations into the design, development, use and evaluation of AI products, services, and systems.”

The Framework was developed through an open and collaborative process, including a Request for Information, several draft versions put out for public comment, a number of workshops and other input opportunities.

A companion NIST AI RMF (Risk Management Framework) Playbook has also been published by NIST.

Light reading it is not. Strong coffee is recommended.
