Milwaukee School’s Data Breach: US Schools Continue to be Targeted by Cyber Criminals

According to a recent article on the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Elmbrook School District in Wisconsin is dealing with the repercussions of a significant data breach that compromised the PII of current and former employees.

The breach was determined to have taken place between August 23 and August 27, 2022. Once aware of the breach, the district hired third party professionals to assist in conducting a forensic review and investigation. The school’s Chief Strategy Officer, Chris Thompson, said the breach affected all active employees and some of their dependents who were on the district’s insurance plan, as well as recent former employees. The district informed employees in September and October of 2022.

A one-year complimentary membership to a credit monitoring service was offered to those affected. To attempt to prevent future breaches, the district has partnered with a security service firm to provide 24/7 managed services of the school system’s network.
