Three Problems You Need to Know About USB-C Cables
June 21, 2018
USB-C connectors are the latest and greatest in USB technology. The latest Android phones and laptops are consistently coming equipped with USB-C ports. However, not all USB-C cables are created equal. How-To Geek has a great post that identifies the problems and gives practical suggestions. Basically, the three problems are:
- The Wrong Cable Could Fry Your Devices
- Not All USB-C Ports Are The Same
- Dongle Hell Is Real
Read the post, but make sure you purchase cables for the intended purpose. If you want to run video over the cable connection, get one that supports video transmissions. One of the biggest problems is cables for charging devices. USB-C supports faster charging, but not all cables can support the faster rates. Using the wrong cable can actually damage older devices that are not native USB-C compatible. As the post points out, "So, for example, if you plug a USB-A device (like a cell phone) into a USB-C port using one of these cables, the phone may draw too much power, frying your phone, USB-C port, or even computer." Not a good thing. Amazon Basic cables are recommended.
You can still use your old cables, but having an adapter to convert the connection could be a problem too. The recommendation here is to use this adapter.
As a side note, I will be taking a break from blogging for the next week hoping to resurface on July 2, 2018.
