Create and Restore a Windows 10 Image Backup

January 24, 2017

If someone says they backup their computer, it typically means that they are only backing up their data. Suffice it to say that users don't backup their data often enough, which would be an excellent way to recover from a ransomware infection, but that's a topic for a future post. Backing up your data is a good thing, but you would have to reinstall the operating system and applications should you have a hard drive (or SSD) failure. Image backups are just that…a complete image of the hard drive, including all applications and the corresponding configurations. In the past, in order to create an image of your system, you had to use a third party product such as Symantec Ghost or Acronis True Image. Not anymore.

Windows 10 includes the ability to create an image backup. PCWorld has the steps you'll need to follow. To begin, you will need to know the administrator account and an external drive. Here is a summary of the required steps.

  1. Launch Control Panel
  2. In the search field, type file history
  3. Click on the File History link
  4. Click on the System Image Backup in the lower-left corner.
  5. Click Create a System Image in the left panel.
  6. Follow the prompts in the Wizard.

The post also has instructions on how to restore from your image backup. Give it a read.
