Google’s Security Focus

There is something about the image of kicking a hornet’s nest. You probably realize it was a really bad decision after the hornets are swarming around your body. I’m thinking there’s a similar feeling with Google, especially after learning the NSA was tapping the undersea fiber connections between Google’s datacenters. Ever since then, Google has been plowing forward with encrypting all data end-to-end and securing data at rest.

The latest announcement has Google protecting your documents and e-mail securely, even on an iPhone. Apparently, Google is not impressed with Apple’s lack of security and feels the need to take control itself. Google’s App Mobile Management previously allowed organizations to manage access to files and e-mail saved in Google Apps from Android devices. Now there is a companion product for iOS devices called iOS Sync. It allows management of WiFi passwords and certificates in addition to other security features such as camera control and password requirements for apps. It is interesting that Google is branching out beyond the Android market and filing the security holes that Apple has left behind.
