Non-Profit Health Care Provider Struck by Ransomware

According to an article in the Oklahoma City Free Press, local healthcare provider Northcare, recently confirmed a serious ransomware attack on its systems. Northcare is a nonprofit organization offering mental health, substance abuse, and family counseling.

The company notified its patients of the compromise via email. The email explained that the attackers had gained access to a number of different sources of personal information including full names, addresses, dates of birth, medical diagnoses and social security numbers.

The email message went on to state a forensic analysis of the situation is ongoing. The hope is that the digital forensic review will assist in determining the full scope of the breach. Private forensic experts and the FBI have been engaged in the investigation. At this time, it is believed the breach occurred over a time frame between May 29^th and June 1^st of this year. Northcare is continuing to limit access to its network as the investigation unfolds.
