Ransomware Strikes Healthcare Billing Company – Over 940,000 Patients Affected

Recently, the HIPPA Journal reported on another ransomware attack in what is starting to feel like a never-ending line of healthcare service provider compromise. The attack affected Practice Resources, a New York based billing and professional services provider that works with clients in the healthcare sector.

According to their breach notification, the attack occurred on April 12th of this year. The bad actors were able to gain access to their network, which stores the PII of patients of their clients. According to the article, information thought to be exposed included “names, addresses, dates of treatment, health plan numbers, and medical record numbers.” An outside digital forensic firm was retained to assist in determining the scope and severity of the breach.

The forensic review of the data determined that the attack had potentially exposed data from 28 clients including a number of hospitals , orthopedic surgeons, and physical therapists.  The breach is believed to have affected 942,138 people in total. Practice Resources is offering those affected free credit monitoring services and ID theft protection.
