Suffolk County New York Asks for $36,000,000 IT Budget After Breach

November 15, 2022

According to a recent article by Rachel Yonkunas for News 12 The Bronx, Suffolk County New York has proposed big changes in their IT Budget to cope with a cyber-attack the county suffered earlier this year.

The attack, which occurred back in September, crippled the county’s website, disrupted government functions and compromised personal information. Well over a month later, some of the county departments were still operating offline, using in-person appointments and paper forms instead of their computer system.

County officials explained that the increase in budget, from approximately 25 million to 36 million, will cover the cost of additional employees and more security measures to strengthen their security posture and potentially help them secure cyber insurance. Chief Deputy County Executive Lisa Black was quoted, “As we re-architect our systems, we’re seeing this as an opportunity for us to be eligible for cyber insurance to take advantage of that.”

The officials also explained that over 4 million dollars had already been spent on digital forensic analysis and recovery over the course of the current incident. By all accounts, the repercussions of this breach are far from over.
