Law Firm Cadwalader Faces Class Action After Data Breach
April 18, 2023
Bloomberg Law reported on April 12 that the New York law firm Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft has been hit by a proposed class action suit for exposing personal data in a November 2022 breach.
The firm “failed to prevent the data breach because it did not adhere to commonly accepted security standards and failed to detect that its databases were subject to a security breach,” the suit alleges.
Ohio-based attorney Patrick Perotti filed the lawsuit in the Southern District of New York, claiming more than 93,000 people had identifying information compromised and are now at risk of credit fraud or identity theft.
Cadwalader was hit by a cyberattack on November 15 and 16 of 2022, when an unauthorized third party gained remote access to the firm’s systems and acquired information from Cadwalader’s network, the complaint said.
The breach caused the firm to wipe firm-issued laptop hard drives and forced many of its internal systems offline, according to media reports.
The case is Perotti v. Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, S.D.N.Y., 1:23-cv-03063, 4/12/23
