Amazon Alexa Hit the 10,000 Skills Mark

February 27, 2017

Third party developers can add additional features to Alexa by coding a "skill." As an Alexa user, you then go to the skill store and add the skill to your Alexa device such as the Echo or Echo Dot. The big news is that Alexa just hit the 10,000 skill mark. That's a pretty remarkable achievement considering that there were only around 1,000 skills last June. I just checked the skill store and there were 437 new skills added in just the last 7 days. Apple and Google have not been nearly as successful in attracting developers to write code for Siri and Google Assistant. As with most things in the technology world, not all skills are created equal. You may find that some skills are extremely useful or that some are just plain stupid.
