Android 7.0 (Nougat) Available for Samsung Galaxy S7 on Verizon

I was able to download the operating system update to Android 7.0 (Nougat) for my Galaxy S7 Edge today. According to the Verizon messages and website, the update contains enhancements and improvements to include:

• More personalization options
• New battery management
• Easier multitasking
• Preview photo effects and filters
• Better graphics and virtual reality mode
• Android security updates

There is a new feature that bundles notifications so you can see them at a glance. Expand the notifications to see more detailed information and reply to conversations without opening any apps. The improved multitasking looks interesting as well. You can switch between apps by double-tapping the screen and use Multi-window view to run 2 apps side-by-side. The Nougat update also has file-based encryption that provides better isolation and file protection.

The download takes some time (at least for me). About 10 minutes into the download, the phone rebooted for some reason. Once the phone came back up the download resumed. After a half hour of very little progress, I decided to shutoff the Wi-Fi and continue the download over the 4G network. The download completed in less than 10 minutes after that. Once the download is complete a warning message tells you that the update will take approximately 27 minutes. How do they know that? Boy did they guess wrong. Actually applying the update took almost an hour. After the OS upgrade, it was another five minutes to optimize the 200+ applications. My suggestion? Turn off Wi-Fi at the start and do the update over 4G. You may want to plug in the charger too while you're at it since it looks like the update sucked about 20% of battery capacity.
