Apple May Ditch Intel Processors

There is a rumor that Apple is secretly working on a processor that will replace Intel chips for Mac computers. Apple shifted over to Intel chips in 2006 for its Mac lineup. It's been a profitable relationship for both companies, but Apple would rather build its own chips instead of counting on someone else. That makes sense, but not as easy in reality. Making its own chips would allow a cleaner merger of operating systems across the Mac and iOS devices. The move would replace the x86 architecture of Intel to ARM-based processors. ARM processors are more efficient, but don't come close to Intel in terms of horsepower. Switching over would require a major change for app developers as well. One of the smartest things I think Apple ever did was the move to Intel, which can run both the Windows and Mac OS. If Apple switches to its own ARM processors, I'm not sure they will still run Windows. If not, that would be a huge mistake just to get a more efficient code base. I certainly hope Microsoft won't resurrect Windows RT.
