Chrome to Kill Java Plugin
April 16, 2015
Chrome 42 brings an end to the support for NPAPI, which has been threatened since 2013. This means that Oracle’s Java plugin will not run in Chrome by default. You will still be able to manually enable support for NPAPI if you really do need to run a plugin that is blocked. However, in September 2015 the option to manually enable support will be removed, effectively killing Java support in Chrome. That’s not surprising since more and more developers are pushing to kill Java-in-the-browser. As the Register reported, “Everyone from the makers of Minecraft to the U.S. government have taken steps to minimize user exposure {to} the menace of miscreants wielding exploits for Java vulnerabilities.”
