Securing Your Home from the Internet of Things

March 5, 2015

F-Secure has published a very useful list of tips to help you secure your home against the Internet of Things. IoT is going to cause a lot of headaches in the future. The wonderful ability to remotely open your front door for your cleaning service or the folks remodeling your kitchen can be compromised by hackers who could sell access to your home to burglars. And this is only the tip of the iceberg.

Much as we have embraced the convenience of IoT, we need to consider what devices we really need in our homes – and whether we should disable some of the features which make those devices vulnerable. Even my brilliant husband had already thought about disabling UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) on our router to make sure that devices cannot open a port on our public Internet address, but I'm sure many of you still have it enabled.

It's a pretty nifty checklist – and it may cause you to wonder whether IoT devices are worth the mischief they may cause.
