How Big is Big Data?

January 10, 2013

I really enjoyed the article "Defending Big Data" in Law Technology News by Editor-in-Chief Monica Bay. Pithy as always, Monica includes a wealth of useful information. I am addicted to collecting statistics that help illustrate points John and I make in seminars. I was struck by the following:

  • According to IBM's Big Data website, humans create 2.5 quintillion bytes of data each day
  • That means that 90% of all the data in the world has been created in the last two years
  • According to data center ViaWest, that's the equivalent of the content that could be stored on 57.5 billion 32GB Apple iPads.

Big Data has serious implications for electronic discovery, privacy and compliance issues. If you haven't been following the rise of big data and the problems (and opportunities) that go with it, read the article. Savvy law firms have discovered that big data means a big new source of revenue.
