Want to Track Me Using My Mobile Device? Get a Warrant G-Man!

June 23, 2011

Like a lot of privacy advocates, I have been appalled by the widespread use of geolocation technology by law enforcement to track people – minus a warrant.

So I was delighted to see that Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, and Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., announced earlier this month the Geolocation Privacy and Surveillance (GPS) Act, which would prohibit service providers from sharing customer’s location information. The bill would require law-enforcement agencies to show probable cause and get a warrant before collecting geolocation data on a person. And yes, it provides criminal penalties for violators.

About time, but thank you to both Rep. Chaffetz and Sen. Wyden for their hard work on this issue.
