U.K. High Court Allows Tweeting

February 8, 2011

The Daily Mail online reported last week that the U.K.'s Supreme Court will allow tweeting from hearings. The court explained that its cases do not involve interaction with witnesses or jurors and there is only rarely a reason why something said in court should not be disseminated immediately.

The court noted "Important exceptions include cases where there are formal reporting restrictions in place, family cases involving the welfare of a child, and cases where publication of proceedings might prejudice a pending jury trial." In those cases, notices of the restriction will be posted at the doors of the courtroom.

The rules among lower courts still vary, but it is interesting that Twitter has become such a force in reporting that the U.K.'s highest court felt compelled to offer guidance on the subject.
