Discarded Buffalo Police Copiers Contain Sensitive Data

April 23, 2010

It looks like my last post about the confidential data that may remain on discarded copiers may have been very timely.

Hat tip to Sean Smith, a reader who was kind enough to forward me a story which just broke involving the purchase by CBS of two copiers which had formerly been leased by the Buffalo Police Department.

One of the hard drives contained details of domestic violence complaints along with a list of wanted sex offenders. Another contained a list of targets in a drug raid three years earlier.

Sources believe there may be dozens of city government copiers that were disposed of or resold, possibly with sensitive data still on them. The mayor refused to comment, saying that city attorneys are investigating the issue. Now that should be fun. For us, not the city officials. Stay tuned.
