NEWS FROM THE ABA TECHSHOW IN CHICAGO

April 3, 2014

John Simek of Sensei Enterprises presented the “N.S.Ay What?  Firm and Client Data Security & Encryption in the Age of Monitoring” at the ABA Techshow last week in Chicago, Illinois.  Mr. Simek and Oracle Corporation’s Chris Ries provided helpful hints and techniques for lawyers to use to avoid the NSA’s surveillance. One of the items discussed was that biometric devices such as fingerprints or retinal scans are currently available, but may not be viable for long if they are compromised. Mr. Simek says that a more secure methodology consists of using security or USB tokens.

One of the best practices for today’s lawyer is to use encryption for e-mail and all forms of electronic communications.  Multiple hardware and software encryption options are now available. A new smartphone with higher levels of security will become available in June when the Spanish company GeeksPhone and the Silent Circle software company launch the “Blackphone”.  This is a NSA-resistant phone using VPN technology for calls, text messages, e-mails and Internet browsing.
