Zoom Fatigue and How to Combat It

February 25, 2021

It’s been almost a year since we’ve been under “house arrest” and working from home as a result of the pandemic. Meetings via video conferencing applications have shot through the roof. Lifehacker posted a summary of a study by Stanford researcher concerning Zoom fatigue and what to do about it. Zoom fatigue is a generic term and isn’t specifically associated with Zoom. Zoom fatigue applies to any video conferencing application such as Teams, Google Meet, Blue Jeans, GoToMeeting, etc. As the post states, “Generally speaking, it describes the fatigue caused by needing to feel perpetually switched on as you jump between browser windows for various online meetings. It makes sense, too, given that studies have shown that increased screen time—especially when coupled with a sedentary lifestyle—heightens your chances of developing moderate to severe depression.”

The real solution is to make yourself more mobile and configure your technology to shift the screen focus. The post offers solutions for areas.

  1. Eye-contact
  2. Self-consciousness
  3. Mobility
  4. Anxiety over nonverbal cues

Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. Don’t fall into the habit of “Zoom first.” A quick phone call may be more effective. You don’t have to always show your video either. Let’s all do our part to help reduce Zoom fatigue.
