Geico Customers Beware

Another day, another data breach. TechCrunch reported that Geico suffered a data breach and exposed customers’ drivers license numbers for months. Geico filed the data breach notice with the California attorney general’s office stating that information gathered from other sources was used to “obtain unauthorized access to your driver’s license number through the online sales system on our website.” Geico said it had “reason to believe that this information could be used to fraudulently apply for unemployment benefits in your name.”

We can certainly confirm that fraudulent unemployment claims have increased dramatically since the pandemic. We have had two claims filed by fraudsters using inaccurate information of past employees. More recently, a false claim was filed by someone claiming to be a current employee that is still employed and never had a break in service. If you happen to be a Geico customer, be on the lookout for false unemployment claims fraudulently using your stolen personal data.
