Avoid Using Public Wi-Fi

August 3, 2021

I get it. We are a very mobile society. It seems like the common goal is to find a free Wi-Fi network to connect to. Data Breach Today reports that the NSA has issued a new advisory warning about the dangers of connecting to public Wi-Fi networks. As more businesses move to a hybrid work environment and more teleworking, don’t be tempted to use insecure network connections. As the NSA reminds us, “Cyber actors employ malicious access points, redirect to malicious websites, inject malicious proxies and eavesdrop on network traffic.”

Our recommendation is to use the hot spot on your mobile device as a first alternative. As the NSA stated, “Avoid connecting to public Wi-Fi, when possible, as there is an increased risk when using public Wi-Fi networks. Use a corporate or personal Wi-Fi hot spot with strong authentication and encryption whenever possible, as it will be more secure.” In other words, just don’t do it. The NSA also warns about the dangers of Bluetooth and NFC.

Be careful out there.
