Change a Drive Letter in Windows 10 and 11

February 24, 2022

When you connect an external storage device to a computer, it gets assigned a drive letter. Typically, the assigned letter is the next in line. The main drive in your computer is designated as the C drive. Insert a flash drive and it gets assigned the D drive. Insert another storage device and it is designated as the E drive. You get the idea. What if you don’t like the drive letter and want to change it? Perhaps you want that 2 TB external hard drive to be the “Recovery Drive” with the drive letter of R. Not a problem.

How-To Geek has a post with instructions for changing the drive letter in a Windows 10 or Windows 11 system. Using the Disk Management utility is pretty straightforward and makes it easy to assign drive letters to specific pieces of equipment. Changing the assigned drive letter may screw up some of your short-cut icons. The post has instructions on how to fix those too.
