Microsoft Blocks Office Macros – Eventually

July 12, 2022

Earlier this year, Microsoft reported that it would roll out a change to automatically block macros from running in files downloaded from the internet. Not so fast. Apparently, in a change of mind, The Verge reported Microsoft is having second thoughts and rolling back the proposed blocking. The change was scheduled to be implemented in June, but Microsoft reverted it June 30th. Kellie Eickmeyer, principal product manager at Microsoft, stated “Following user feedback, we have rolled back this change temporarily while we make some additional changes to enhance usability. This is a temporary change, and we are fully committed to making the default change for all users.”

In other words…just kidding. The original plan was to select an unblock option in the file properties. Apparently, checking a box is just too complex for a lot of users. The good news is that Microsoft still plans to automatically block macros from running in internet downloaded files, but we’re not sure when or how it will be implemented.
