Can You Name Your Wi-Fi Networks Using Emojis?

It’s a good security practice to name your Wi-Fi network with something that does not give a clue as to who the owner is or where the network may be located. The name could be helpful for someone to determine which network may be an attractive target. Using a Wi-Fi name such as ABC_Bank could attract a lot of attention due to the potential financial nature of transactions. Using some off-the-wall name can help “hide” the identity. What about using emojis to create a funky Wi-Fi network name? How-To Geek discusses that very subject.

The short answer is…you can use emojis in your network name. The post describes the technical reasons as to why emojis will work. The real question is, should you? When you connect a device to the Wi-Fi network, you’ll need to configure the network name (SSID). That means your device has to be able to enter a proper emoji designation or you won’t be able to connect. Just think of all those attempts at emojis you’ve seen in text messages and emails, especially between Apple and Android devices. I would recommend against using emojis in your Wi-Fi network name. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.
